Listicles National Protect Your Hearing Month 2021

Now Hear This: 5 Facts About Your Ears

  1. Ears are always on

Even while you sleep, your ears are still at work. The only difference is since you’re unconscious, your brain isn’t processing those sounds you may be hearing.

  2. They’re made up of three bones

These three bones are small enough to be placed together on a penny.

  3. They’re on self-clean mode

Earwax helps keep your ears clean so you don’t have to.

  4. Fish and snakes can hear you

Though they don’t have ears, snakes use their jawbones to identify sounds while fish use ridges on their body to respond to pressure changes.

  5. Limited Hearing

If a sound goes higher than our natural hearing limit, all we’ll hear is a buzz. We don’t recommend you try it out.

Hello? Can you hear us now? Good — because we’ve got to tell you about National Protect Your Hearing Month. This October we focus on causes of hearing loss and ways to prevent it. Studies show one in five Americans older than 12 have experienced hearing loss in an ear. It can result from work-related noise exposure and leisure activities, such as sporting events or concerts. Since noise-induced hearing loss is permanent, it’s better to be proactive. While you don’t have to avoid all noise, maybe skip the front row concert tickets or opt for quiet “you” time instead.

Magic Day 2021

Tip: Hanna Andersson coupon codes: Hanna Andersson Promo Codes, Coupons November 2021

Magic Day started with a “Houdini Day”, the first of which took place in the summer of 1927, less than one year after the famous magician’s death. His wife presented a trophy in honour of him on that day.

Harry Houdini is quite probably one of the reasons magic is so popular today and at the time of his death he was the most famous member of the Society of American Magicians. Houdini died at 1:26pm on October 31st, 1926.

Houdini is most famous for his escape artistry, varying from escaping from chains, ropes, handcuffs and straightjackets while dangling in the air above his audience, to escaping from a locked milk can, filled with water. He went so far as to challenge police in every city he visited to restrain him in their jails and handcuffs – more often than not he was strip-searched first.

AIDS Awareness Month History

History of AIDS Awareness Month

HIV/AIDS, or the human immunodeficiency virus and its associated immune deficiency syndrome, first appeared in the Congo in the 1920s, spread to the Western Hemisphere via the Caribbean in the 1960s, and became a global pandemic in the 1980s as cases exploded around the world.

Because the first diagnosed patients were gay men, it was first believed that AIDS only affected homosexuals, drug users, and later people of Haitian origin. As scientists discovered more about the disease, they learned it was caused by a virus that could be transmitted in several ways and could affect anyone. By the end of 1985, more than 20,000 cases of AIDS were reported all over the world. Doctors and researchers scrambled to understand the infection and develop treatments and vaccines.

In 1987, the first antiretroviral medication effective in treating HIV, azidothymidine (known as AZT), was developed. A positive diagnosis was no longer a death sentence, but despite new information and treatment options, HIV/AIDS continued to spread. By the end of the 1980s, AIDS was a full-blown crisis, with more than 400,000 diagnosed cases.

To date, about 35 million people have died from AIDS, and roughly that same number live with the virus. In 2010, there were over 20 approved treatment options for HIV/AIDS, and new treatments are developed all the time. No vaccine exists yet, but thanks to anti-retroviral drugs and constantly improving treatment options, it’s now possible for an HIV patient with access to care to live a full and healthy life.

AIDS Awareness Month, observed every October, supports educational campaigns that disseminate science-based, factual, and clear information to youths, at-risk people, and the general public. With over 37 million people living with HIV worldwide, public information about its prevention, transmission, and treatment must be accurate and widely available.

Advocates have several goals including educating people about the importance of knowing your status and regular testing, lobbying for accessible and affordable testing and treatment, reducing stigma, ensuring the public has accurate information about HIV risk and transmission and supporting patients living with HIV/AIDS.

Listicles Eat Better, Eat Together Month 2021

5 Weird Foods We Dare You To Try

  1. Fungus-Ridden Corncob (Mexico)

A corncob covered in blue-black spores is a culinary specialty in Mexico. Yup, Mexicans devour the fungus. It apparently has a wood flavor.

  2. Fermented Horse's Milk (Mongolia)

Mongolians ferment a hare's milk till it's fizzy, slightly sour, and sort of alcoholic. It is the Mongolians' idea of beer and by no stretch an unusual offering in the rugged country.

  3. Century Egg (China)

Eggs are covered in clay, salt, and ash and allowed for ferment for about two to three months. At the end of this (inexplicable) exercise, the egg yolk turns green, smells of sulphur, and, apparently, is a delicacy.

  4. Sperm Sacs of Fish (Japan)

The Japanese boil sperm sacs of cod or angler fish and enjoy them as a delicacy. The sacs look like miniature brains and are supposed to have a sweet taste to them.

  5. Larvae of Ant (Mexico)

A venomous ant species lays its eggs in the agave plants in Mexico. The Mexicans harvest the larvae and use them as a filling for their tacos. They supposedly have a nutty flavor.

Traditional National Cat Day

National Cat Day Traditions

The main purpose behind National Cat Day is to recognize the number of cats in need of rescue each year and so it is tradition for people to try and raise awareness of the topic. As well as those cats in need of rescue, many choose to observe the day by showing some love to the cat or cats in their life.

Tip: ServerPronto discount codes: 10% Off ServerPronto Coupons & Promo Codes October 2021

National Cat Day is celebrated on October 29. It was created by Colleen Paige to bring awareness to the number of cats that need to be rescued each year. Cats remind us that just when you think they’ve lost interest in you, they’ll turn around and melt your hearts. When it appears they’re too busy staring out at passing cars, chasing nylon mice, and sending tiny multi-colored balls to their under-the-refrigerator graves, they’ll somehow let you know that their very world revolves around you. Just wait. It’ll happen when you least expect it. Cats have their own timetable.

World Menopause Month History

History of World Menopause Month

World Menopause Month was created as a means to raise awareness of the stage in a woman’s life when she stops menstruating. It helps women understand the possible health issues associated when approaching, during, and after menopause. The World Health Organisation (WHO) and the International Menopause Society designated October as World Menopause Month. October 18 was also dubbed as World Menopause Day.

In England in the 1800’s doctors prescribed a pre-meal mixture of carbonated soda to their menopausal patients. Opium and cannabis were also prescribed by doctors to curb menopause symptoms. Other remedies included a large plaster (belladonna) placed at the pit of the patient’s stomach, and some even gave out vaginal injections of acetate of lead. Doctors were then surprised when hysteria was one of the many symptoms presented.

In the 1890s, Ovariin was prescribed by doctors. Ovariin was made by desiccating and pulverizing cow ovaries. It was one of the first known commercially available treatments for menopause symptoms. By the 1930s menopause was being described as a deficiency disease. Over time Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) became commonly used and is the most sophisticated remedy for menopause symptoms to date.

The first World Menopause Month was in October 2014. The International Menopause Society promoted it and launched a campaign called ‘‘Prevention of Diseases After Menopause.’’ The aim was to bring awareness to chronic diseases that were more likely to affect women after menopause.

Tip: Double Wood Supplements discount codes: Get $5 Off Double Wood Supplements Promo Codes, Coupons October 2021

During World Menopause Month, let’s talk about it openly. It’s a normal, natural part of the aging process, yet many women are still worried about going through menopause. Sure, there are some less desirable symptoms that accompany changing hormones — like hot flashes — but there are also things to celebrate, such as no more periods, PMS, or worrying about unwanted pregnancies. Add to that the increased self-confidence, self-awareness, and greater freedom that menopause often brings, and October can become a time of amazing personal growth and excitement. Embrace it, don’t try to erase it!

Respiratory Care Week History

History of Respiratory Care Week

It took almost 40 years for Respiratory Care Week to become a vehicle to raise awareness about respiratory illnesses and why we need trained respiratory therapists in the healthcare industry. In 1943, Dr. Edwin Levine established a no-frills inhalation program at Michael Reese Hospital in Chicago. This program provided on-the-job-training for respiratory therapists to assist post-surgical patients with their respiratory needs. By 1973, the organizations involved in this work became today’s American Association for Respiratory Care (AARC).

Driven by the AARC, President Ronald Reagan issued a proclamation declaring the last full week in October as National Respiratory Therapy Week. The proclamation on September 15, 1983 spells out why this week is so important. “Chronic lung diseases constitute an important health problem in the United States. They afflict nearly 18 million Americans and cause nearly 70,000 deaths each year, many of which are the direct result of cigarette smoking.”

Although cigarette smoking today isn’t nearly as huge a problem as it was 36 years ago, the current rash of vaping or e-cigarette illnesses has replaced cigarettes as a new culprit affecting younger smokers. (In fact, as of September, 2019; the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) are reporting just under 1000 people are suffering from respiratory distress due to this new fad.)

Respiratory Care Week not only shines a spotlight on efforts to reduce disabling lung conditions like asthma and COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease) but the week is devoted to panel discussions and  special events to help raise public awareness about what they can do to reduce devastating lung conditions. Additionally, this week is designed to boost interest on the part of people who might want to become respiratory therapists or other health professionals working in the area of respiratory care.

Listicles National Chiropractic Month 2021

5 Tips For A Pain-Free Back

  1. Work on Your Posterior Core

Your core comprises both abdominal and back muscles. Generally, most people have stronger abdominal muscles. Spend more time on the muscles in your back when you are at the gym.

  2. Practice Endurance Over Strength

Focus on getting more repetitions out of your back exercises than increasing the weight your are lifting. The "plank," an isometric core exercise, is a great way to strengthen the muscles in your back.

  3. Try the "Hip Hinge" Instead

When you're bending down to lift something, make it a point to do the "hip hinge" while keeping your back straight. When you avoid bending your back, you will avoid most back injuries.

  4. Wear Better Shoes

Shoes help your body and spine stay aligned. They should fit nicely around your heel without being too tight, to avoid a bad walking or standing posture.

  5. Get Up From Your Desk Regularly

Your lower spine is three times more stressed when you are sitting, compared to standing. Long periods of continued sitting can lead to chronic back conditions. Take a break from work every 30 minutes or so. Even a quick walk is enough.

National Chiropractic Month, observed every October, emphasizes alternative methods of treatment, which yield better results.

Listicles Breast Cancer Awareness Month 2021

Five Reasons Why October Is The Pinkest Month

  1. Breast cancer doesn't discriminate

Although breast cancer is more prevalent among American white women, African-American women tend to die from the disease more often.

  2. Breast cancer can baffle scientists

Scientists don't really understand why the left breast seems to develop cancer more often than the right breast.

  3. Breast cancer surgery was a trailblazer

The very first operation to use anesthesia to deaden pain was a breast cancer surgery.

  4. Men get it too

Overall, only one percent of American males are diagnosed with breast cancer, but African-American men just like women in their community, are more prone to die from the disease.

  5. Breast cancer — the nuns' disease

At one time, breast cancer was called "the nuns' disease" because it seemed to afflict more nuns than women in the general population.

The National Breast Cancer Foundation reports that a woman is diagnosed with breast cancer every two minutes. Innovations in research, surgical options and clinical trials give women many more options. With early detection, a woman’s survival rate goes up. Listicles Health Literacy Month 2021

3 Fascinating Body Oddities

  1. Rollercoaster Organ Shift

Yes, that "stomach in your mouth" feeling when the rollercoaster plummets is actually some of your internal organs shifting slightly. Don't worry, though. The movement is only slight and they come right back to where they belong

  2. Women are Colder than Men

Not emotionally, physiologically. While women have a higher body fat percentage to keep vital organs warm, this leads to their extremities getting colder, sooner. Hence, the relative lower body temperature compared to men.

  3. Achy Joints Can Predict Weather

When bad weather is about to set in, the atmospheric pressure drops. This drop can lead to expansion of body tissue, which can result in swelling. The effect is more pronounced in people with arthritis

Boss’ Day 2021

Tip: Fox Racing coupon codes: Fox Racing Free Shipping on Orders Over $75

Sometimes we just don’t think enough about our Boss’s or what they go through to help keep us working and make sure our wages get paid. We often think of them as slave drivers or adversaries with unrealistic expectations of what we can accomplish in a day.

But do we ever stop to think about the work they put into getting new clients, keeping old ones, and ensuring everything moves along smoothly? Mostly not. Boss’ Day reminds us that it’s not all roses at the top of the pecking order either, so be sure to thank your boss for all they do!

History of Boss’ Day

Boss’ Day was created by Patricia Bays Haroski in 1958 when she registered it with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce while working as a secretary at State Farm Insurance. The date she selected was her father’s birthday, due in no small part to the fact that she was working for him at the time.

She felt that the work her father did was rarely recognized and that employees rarely showed appreciation for these people who kept their workplaces moving smoothly. By 1979 it had grown popular enough that Hallmark Cards issued a Boss’ Day card to honor the holiday.

It continued to grow in popularity until recent years when growing social awareness and class awareness has led to controversy about its celebration.

There is a power differential between employees and employers, where the employer generally makes more money and has more power overall, and thus it has been posited that Boss’ Day should not be observed and that any gift-giving in the workplace should flow down.

It’s an interesting debate, but we feel that it’s important to recognize that Bosses are people too, and while they may be in a position of greater power, they also have greater responsibility, and their efforts are what gives employees continuing work.

Perhaps both Boss and Employee need to work together to create an environment of teamwork in the workplace, and Boss’ Day can be a good step in that direction.

How to celebrate Boss’ Day

Celebrate Boss’ Day by giving them a nice card, or just stop in and let them know how much you appreciate what they do. If you realize that you don’t really know what their work consists of or what demands are placed on them, Boss’ Day can also be a good opportunity to learn exactly what they do each day to keep your workplace moving smoothly.

The challenge of celebrating Boss’ Day

Not everyone will jump at the thought of lavishing the boss with presents. Not to be cynical, but relationships may be strained and not altogether healthy. In that case, it’d be weird to leave flowers on their desk, although it would be a nice olive branch. Tip: don’t get them an olive branch.

On the flip side, nobody wants to look like they’re cozying up to the decision-maker. Boss’ Day as an employee is challenging, but it doesn’t have to be:

  • Keep it simple – don’t overthink a gift. A card is sincere and says everything that needs saying without going over-the-top. Flowers, however, appear extravagant and may put the boss in a tight spot.
  • Use jokes as cover – a gag gift is always an excellent form of protection. The wittiness and humor outweigh everything, meaning you don’t get labeled the boss’ favorite for the wrong reasons. Who knew whoopie cushions were invented for Boss’ Day?!
  • Say it out loud – don’t want to get them a present, even if it’s a joke? That’s fair, but remember that actions speak louder than words. Research shows that high performers are the ones who understand their role in maintaining relationships. Pulling your weight doesn’t get any easier than saying, “Happy Boss’ Day, boss.” The title of the holiday does 25% of the work!
  • Let HR do it – forget everything you read about maintaining relationships and being the bigger person – that’s what Human Resources is for! Joking aside, presents on Boss’ Day may appear conceited. By getting HR involved in the process, you can keep the head honcho happy without sticking your head out of the parapet.

Why is Boss’ Day worth the effort?

It’s not surprising that some people think it’s a croc and needs abolishing. Okay, “some” is misleading! As decadent as the idea seems, it is well worth the effort for employees. Don’t forget that cozying up to the person who makes decisions can have a powerful impact on a career. And, if you don’t care what people think, that’s all the better!

Mostly, though, Boss’ Day is about showing appreciation and maintaining harmony in the office. Too often, workers forget that those at the top of the corporate ladder are humans and not faceless robots. They would love to be part of the team, but it’s not appropriate. Boss’ Day is that one time it’s okay to remind them that you appreciate the difficulty of their job.

As ever, it’s never a bad move to encourage a day of drinking coffee and eating cake in the workplace!

How should bosses act?

Bosses, if you’re reading this – give your workers a pay rise!

In all seriousness, a leader needs to know the steps to take to accept a gift, and it starts by not encouraging mandatory observation of the holiday. This isn’t North Korea – you’re not the Supreme Leader!

After that, it’s all about saying thank you and being gracious for the thought. Reminding people of their importance, even though it’s not their day, will work wonders, too.

How do you celebrate Boss’ Day as a collective?

Listicles Fair Trade Month 2021

3 Fair Trade Myths

  1. It's charity

The relationships established as part of the fair trade movement are self-sufficient. Your money is not going to charity.

  2. It's more expensive

Most fair trade items are competitively priced with American goods that are also handmade.

  3. It takes away U.S. jobs

Most of the products and services offered through fair trade are not generally available in the U.S. or represented in the U.S. These products represent diversity, not replacement.

Fair Trade Month is about supporting businesses that are fair trade certified. Fair Trade businesses seek to create a more equal international trade system through increased respect and transparency. This puts an emphasis on trading fairly with businesses from developing countries. During this month, Americans are encouraged to #FindFairTrade through stores in their own communities or by purchasing through Fair Trade partners online.

National Pet Obesity Day History

History of National Pet Obesity Day

While humans have domesticated animals for hundreds of years, only most recently have we seen such an exponential increase of plus-sized pets. While it’s hard to say no to those precious faces when it comes to food, it’s important to practice discipline for the safety and well-being of our beloved companions. It starts with recognizing there is a problem. Pet owners think their obese dog or cat is a normal weight, making confronting obesity difficult. No one wants to think their pet is overweight, and overcoming denial is our first battle. Currently more than half of all domestic dogs and cats are clinically overweight, which is to say their body condition score is above a four. That amounts to nearly 49 million dogs and more than 50 million cats who are a bit portlier than their peers. This can lead to serious health issues for these animals including diabetes, arthritis, decreased life expectancy, high blood pressure and cancer. Not only will it be hard for your pet, but it will be hard for you to watch, not to mention these conditions can quickly become very costly. The good news is that pet obesity can be easily prevented by taking a few cautionary steps, thanks to the Association for Pet Obesity Prevention (APOP).

Pets come in all shapes and sizes, but sometimes sizes get a little out of hand. That’s why on October 14 we recognize National Pet Obesity Day to remind people to keep their pets healthy. When your pooch starts getting a little plump, you know it’s time for a few things . More walks, less table scraps, and perhaps even an additional visit to the vet to make sure they’re still healthy. While a rotund Rover can be a cute or funny sight, that extra layer for lovin’ can have some serious consequences. Thanks to National Pet Obesity Day, we can now all learn more about this problem among our beloved pets.

Adventure Day 2021

Tip: Best Pressure Washer Coupons: Best Pressure Washer Coupons & Deals October 2021

Do you know yourself well? Did you make up adventures as a child just to escape the grind of daily life, or do you still? There’s nothing like using your imagination when jumping out of a tree and for a few moments imagining you were flying with Peter Pan. As we get older and, more and more responsibilities pile up we can forget that life is the never-ceasing adventure that we are on. We have the choice of taking the risk and living our lives with wide-eyed joyfulness or holding our breath for fear of what is around the corner. Adventure Day reminds us that we’re only here for a short while, and any day is a good day to have an adventure.

History of Adventure Day

What’s in a word? Follow it back far enough, and you can find its roots in Latin with the word “adventurus” which became “aventure” in the French, a word which means “about to happen” or “arrive.” This word also had some cultural meanings that referred to the fate that would befall a man if he were simply to wait at home rather than going out to grasp what life had to offer. An adventure was what happened when you set out to take life by the hand and live it.

Adventurers were not bound by fate but instead would take on the rigors of life to help make their own. Physical, mental, and emotional challenges help us to grow and wrest our fates from the hands of the Gods. Whether you choose to indulge in mountain climbing, skydiving, or just approaching that cute stranger at the coffee shop, you’re taking a risk that can bring great things to your life.

Adventure Day reminds us that every day should be an adventure and that to waste a single moment is to leave our lives in the hands of fate.

How to Celebrate Adventure Day

When we’re children, we know that every moment of our lives is an adventure. Whether we’re in the backyard using our imagination to create grand stories and transform our backyards into a bountiful world of play, or marveling in something as simple as a new food, we experience everything with our eyes wide open.

Adventure Day encourages you to get out and face the world with that same enthusiasm and lack of fear, recognizing that life is meant for living, and every day presents us with opportunities to take joy in everything from large to small.

Why Do We Celebrate National Non-GMO Month?

National Non-GMO Month Activities

  1. Find a participating grocery store near you

Look for savings on Verified products, free educational materials, and special events. Support your local retailers by shopping at their locations, and thank them for being part of Non-GMO Month. Choosing Non-GMO Project Verified products has a positive impact on the entire food supply chain.

  2. Host or attend an event (safely, of course)

Consider hosting a Non-GMO Month event in your town or check out your local store’s events. One powerful but simple idea: host a film screening at home or via video chat. Invite friends to watch any of the great films documenting the impacts of genetically modified foods, and serve Non-GMO Project Verified snacks.

  3. Find a participating grocery store near you

Look for savings on Verified products, free educational materials, and special events. Support your local retailers by shopping at their locations, and thank them for being part of Non-GMO Month. Choosing Non-GMO Project Verified products has a positive impact on the entire food supply chain.

Why We Love National Non-GMO Month

  1. It promotes awareness and a healthier food system

Protecting and building a non-GMO food supply is critical to preserving the biodiversity of our agricultural system. Responsible for North America’s most trusted third party verification and labeling for non-GMO food and products, the Non-GMO project also educates consumers and the food industry to help build awareness about GMOs and their impact on our health and food systems.

  2. It helps reduce the impact to the planet

Industrial agriculture relies on substantial chemical inputs that cost mother earth dearly. Since the introduction of GMO crops, there has been a fifteenfold increase in the use of glyphosate. The Non-GMO Project works to counteract this scary trend.

  3. It keeps people informed of the ever changing GMO world

Over 80% of conventional processed foods contain GMOs. With products created from new genetic engineering techniques flooding the marketplace, educating the public about new GMOs is a big part of what the Non-GMO Project does.

Tip: pressed juicery coupon codes: pressed juicery Saving $30 Coupons & Promo Codes October 2021

October is Non-GMO Month, a chance to raise awareness about how choosing non-genetically modified foods can promote a healthy diet and sustainable agricultural practices. This year, the Non-GMO Project is partnering with Fairtrade America—two great non-profits that are working to build a better food system for people and the planet. To help them celebrate and promote their mission to fix industrial agriculture look for the non-GMO Butterfly and the Fair Trade farmer on all your favorite groceries. And tell your favorite grocery store staff how much you appreciate having the choice to vote with your dollars for a better way.

This year, the Non-GMO Project is paying particular attention to the essential role retailers have played during the pandemic: they’re sending out branded, organic cotton face masks to retailers across the country. The importance of transparency and labeling in our food system underscores the overwhelming need for the Non-GMO Project seal, solidifying the essential connection between the people who grow the food and the people who eat the food.

German-American Heritage Month History

History of German-American Heritage Month

In October 1683 German families began settling in Pennsylvania. Since then, German Americans have contributed greatly to our society. As well as the already mentioned Easter Bunny and Santa, the Germans have had a huge influence in car manufacturing, the building of churches, the arts, and even the language. Love a good hamburger? That came from Hamburg in Germany. Hugely historical entrepreneurs such as Heinz, Chrysler, Boeing, and Rockefeller all have German American heritage.

The first proclamation of German-American Heritage Month was issued by Ronald Reagan in October 1987, and since then we have been celebrating every year.

Whack on some Bavarian tunes and take a bite into a bratwurst because October is German-American Heritage Month. How do you show your gratitude to those who gave America these can’t-miss traditions: Christmas trees, Easter Bunnies, and Santa? Well, some things are invaluable, but we can certainly try our best by being there for the parades and festivals throughout this month of celebration.

Mental Health Month 2021

Tip: Siren Australia coupon codes: Siren Australia Free Australia Shipping on $70+

In any given year, more than one in five of us will experience some type of mental health problem. It is no surprise, therefore, that there’s a need for an event like Mental Health Awareness Month. It connects us with the issues that face millions of people every year and delivers help for those most in need.

Do you know somebody with a mental health condition? Has a doctor diagnosed you with one? If so, it is time to get involved, raise money, and spread awareness of how things like anxiety and depression affect people’s lives.

Learn about Mental Health Awareness Month

Mental Health Awareness Month is an annual event organized by Mental Health – known historically as the Association for Mental Health. The event aims to enhance the public consciousness of mental health issues through a variety of activities and campaigns that continue for roughly four weeks.

Mental health issues are still widely misunderstood by both the public and mental health professionals. While there is far less stigma surrounding issues that affect the body, health issues that concern the mind still carry some of the burdens of the past. People with depression, for instance, don’t just have the “blues.” Researchers now increasingly believe that the condition results from physiological problems in the brain, many of which relate to environmental factors. Similarly, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, multiple personality disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and others seem to have biological bases.

These conditions can be challenging to understand from the outside. There’s a tendency to label people living with mental health problems with morally-loaded terms. But practices such as these are unhelpful at best.

Mental Health Awareness Month, therefore, is a chance for everyone to work together to see mental health through a new lens. Philosophically, the event is an effort to alter perceptions. Instead of blaming the individual for their behavior, it is an opportunity to understand the plight of sufferers and find solutions.

History of Mental Health Awareness Month

Mental Health – formerly known as the Association for Mental Health – organized the first Mental Health Awareness Month in 1949. Interestingly, though, it is not the only society that engages in periodic outreach throughout the year. Other organizations, such as the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, also get heavily involved in annual campaigns.

Mental health issues are, unfortunately, a scourge on our society – a hidden epidemic that often rumbles on in the background, hiding its scale. Mental Health Awareness Month, therefore, is an attempt to bring these issues to the fore. In the past, the purpose of the month was to raise funds for those affected by various conditions. But in recent times, organizers shifted the emphasis to the problem of stigma.

Stigma is one of the main reasons why people don’t come forward for mental health treatment. Patients view their symptoms as a mark of their character instead of a problem with their biology, outside of their control. People do not see a broken leg as a sign of personal inadequacy, but they may take that view with mental health conditions.

Another purpose of the event is to highlight the fact that treatments are improving with every passing year. Talk therapies, medications, and lifestyle interventions all combine to produce radically beneficial outcomes for patients. There’s no need for people to suffer in silence. Options are available.

In 2008, the theme for Mental Health Awareness month was social connectedness. The organizers wanted to highlight the fact that isolation is a significant driver of mental health issues. People who live alone, especially the elderly, can experience higher rates of depression.

In 2009, they updated the theme to “live your life well.” The idea here was to educate the public on how to adopt pro-mental health lifestyles that could prevent conditions from developing in the first place. There was an emphasis on socializing more, getting exercise, and learning how to deal with stress.

Throughout the subsequent years, organizers introduced the public with a host of new ideas, designed to raise awareness of specific facets of mental health. In 2017, for instance, the theme was “Risky Business” and focused on the behaviors most likely to result in mental illness. These included things like risky sex, troublesome exercise patterns, the use of drugs, and excessive spending.

In 2019, the focus was on getting “fit for the future.” The organizers wanted to help people with mental health conditions lay the groundwork in their lives today to live a happy and prosperous life tomorrow.

How to celebrate Mental Health Awareness Month

Mental health is a significant concern in our society, but it is also something that we can each address individually. The good news is that you can get involved with the effort and lend a helping hand to those around you.

The easiest way to get involved in Mental Health Awareness Month is to download the Mental Health Month Toolkit. This resource provides you with practically everything that you need to improve your own mental health, and that of the people around you. It includes material that helps you to own your feelings, look for the positives in situations, and eliminate the toxic influences on your life. It also provides information on how to create a healthy routine, support other people in your community, and connect with those who might be isolated.

The second thing that you can do is learn more about the stigmas of mental health. As we discussed, researchers are increasingly coming to the view that mental health conditions are strictly biological processes. Individual patients do not choose their health problems. You might, therefore, want to reach out in ways that highlight this important point.

Next, you could treat yourself to a spot of pampering or a well-deserved vacation. Regular working life can be tough. But going away for a week in the sun gives you a chance to recharge your batteries and gain a new lease on life.

Finally, you can attend events and share information related to mental health with your friends and family on social media.

Here’s to a brighter and healthier future!

International Podiatry Day 2021

Tip: Harry Barker promo codes: 15% Off Harry Barker Coupons & Promo Codes October 2021

Our feet are more important than many of us think. Not only do they help to keep us upright and to move around, but the health of our feet can even indicate how healthy we are in other parts of our body. Foot health is a big issue that everyone should be aware of. International Podiatry Day is about making sure that everyone knows just how essential it is to look after our feet.

The day is focused on raising awareness about foot health for everyone, from the general public to government bodies and health professionals. The health of our feet can give a good indication of our general health and even offer warning signs for some illnesses, as well as being closely linked to certain conditions.

For example, it’s vital that people with diabetes monitor their foot health but their raised blood sugar gives them a greater chance of developing foot problems. International Podiatry Day recognizes these issues and promotes the importance of foot health.

History of International Podiatry Day

The International Federation of Podiatrists is behind International Podiatry Day. The federation has existed since 1947 as a nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing podiatry worldwide. It has 26 member countries sharing research, practice and knowledge between them.

International Podiatry Day replaced another event that used to be held earlier in the year. The event is now a modern celebration that uses social media campaigns to raise awareness. The aim of the International Federation of Podiatrists is to make it the biggest event with a focus on worldwide foot health.

Key leaders in podiatry support this event every year and talk about why podiatry and foot health are important to them. More up-to-date ways of recognizing the event have included informative videos and social media hashtags. You can start to see people celebrating months before the day arrives.

How to celebrate International Podiatry Day

The most important part of celebrating International Podiatry Day is spreading awareness about the importance of foot health. If you are ready to get involved, you can do whatever you like to spread the word about podiatry. Of course, it’s also essential that you educate yourself first so that you can pass on the things that you learn.

You can read about many health conditions related to the feet, as well as information on how to keep your feet healthy. Looking after your feet day-to-day involves things like wearing the right shoes and caring for your toenails. You can learn about how to keep your own feet healthy and how a podiatrist can help you.

When you have learned about foot health, it’s time to start spreading the word and helping to educate others. You can use social media or talk to people in person about why the cause of podiatry and foot health is one that you want to promote. Talking about health issues is vital and we should all be more open about our health. So don’t be shy about discussing foot health, and letting people know about International Podiatry Day.

National Physician Assistant Week History

History of National Physician Assistant Week

Physician assistants are medical professionals with thousands of hours of training. Their skills enable them to diagnose illnesses, prescribe medications, and perform many medical tasks.

As their name implies, PAs work closely with doctors and other healthcare providers. In most states, a PA has an agreement with a specific physician and practices alongside them. Physicians can oversee up to 4 PAs. The supervising physician doesn’t have to be present when a PA is practicing, letting them take care of other tasks while the PA continues patient care. Physician Assistants can prescribe and administer medication, acting on behalf of their supervising physician. In some cases, PAs can even perform surgical procedures that use local anesthesia without the supervision of the physician.

In contrast with Nurse Practitioners, who specialize in one area of medicine, PAs have a strong background in general medicine. This enables them to notice things that specialists might miss, making them a crucial component of a complete healthcare team. By relieving some of the duties of physicians, PAs help alleviate the pressure faced by overworked doctors and strained hospitals and clinics.

Established in 1968 as the American Association of Physician Assistants, the American Academy of Physician Assistants was instrumental in the development of nationwide standards and PA certification. Today, they promote the profession and lobby for benefits for its members. Its first members were graduates of Duke University’s Physician Assistant program, the first in the country. Today, there are over 140,000 PAs practicing in the U.S., making 400 million patient interactions each year.

Physician Assistants are unsung heroes and deserve their moment in the limelight, so this week is to celebrate them and be thankful for their efforts.

National Spina Bifida Awareness Month History

History of National Spina Bifida Awareness Month

Spinal defects have existed since the beginnings of mankind. Anthropologists have uncovered many depictions in statues and artifacts from ancient civilizations of people young and old with malformed spinal cords. In the Classical Period of the Greek physician Hippocrates, descriptive writings revealed such defects, though they didn’t have the proper medical science and tools to heal them at the time.

The first description of a spina bifida case was by Nicolas Tulp in 1653. Tulp proposed the term and described it as a vertebral anomaly and it was considered a duplication of the spinous process of the vertebra. Spina Bifida was first found in the textbook Observationes Medicae, written by Tulp, with descriptions of six Spina Bifida cases. One illustration showed a Spina Bifida case of a child with a large lumbar level myelomeningocele defect.

From the early 1600s to the mid-1800s, surgeons attempted to treat Spina Bifida to no avail. Despite this, they continued their research and approached the defect with new techniques, draining or injecting solutions into the sac. Mortality rates fell, but patient debilitation was still the end result. In the middle of the nineteenth century, Dr. James Morton used an iodine and glycerine solution for injection into the sac and this technique proved successful.

In 1973, the Spina Bifida Association of America was formed in Chicago Illinois and it was primarily used as a source of information for its chapters and members. They enabled children with spina bifida to live longer by using new treatments and diagnostic tools that helped families affected by it. As time goes on, the month of October is named as its official month and in the twenty-first century, events and fundraisers have increased in the ongoing battle to better treat spina bifida.

Tip: Top Bulb coupon codes: Top Bulb 5% Off $75+ Orders

There are hundreds of thousands of people who have Spina Bifida, and throughout the month of October, we celebrate National Spina Bifida Awareness Month to raise awareness and support for them. Spina Bifida is a birth defect that occurs when the spine and spinal cord don’t form properly. This neural tube becomes the baby’s brain, spinal cord, and the tissues that enclose them. Spina bifida occulta or “hidden” spina bifida doesn’t cause any disabilities and it doesn’t appear until later in life. Typically, there’s a gap in the baby’s back instead of an opening and there’s no damage to the spinal cord or the nerves.
